Job Role: Industrial Painter

Industrial Painter (NCVT Certified)
An Industrial Painter applies various types of paints, varnishes, and coatings to buildings, industrial equipment, and other structures. The role demands precision, skill, and knowledge of different painting techniques and materials to ensure surfaces are protected, durable, and aesthetically appealing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Select appropriate paint or finish based on surface type, durability, ease of application, and customer specifications.
  • Prepare surfaces by scraping, sanding, abrasive blasting, chemical stripping, or cleaning to ensure proper paint adhesion.
  • Remove old paint layers through burning, wire brushing, water blasting, or abrasive blasting.
  • Fill holes and cracks, weld, sandpaper, and trim surfaces to remove dirt, grease, and rough spots.
  • Apply primer coats on new surfaces to prepare them for finishing coats.
  • Mix paints, match colors, and adjust consistency by blending pigments, oils, thinners, and other substances based on paint composition and color harmony.
  • Choose and operate various paint applicators such as brushes, rollers, or spray guns, adjusting air pressure valves and nozzles when spraying.
  • Handle and maintain spray guns, compressors, and paint booths, ensuring quality and safety.

Core Practical Skills:

  1. Perform marking, sawing, planing, chiseling, and drilling following safety precautions.
  2. Make various wooden joints for frames like screen frames, signboards, and hanging picture frames.
  3. Fabricate simple sheet metal items from drawings and join them.
  4. Join sheet metal items by soldering, brazing, and riveting.
  5. Explain and make various pipe fittings for painting and maintenance jobs.
  6. Join metal components by arc welding following standard procedures.
  7. Cut and join metal components by gas welding (oxy-acetylene).
  8. Join metal parts by riveting, ensuring structural integrity and finish.

Surface Preparation & Painting Techniques:

  1. Prepare wooden surfaces for painting and decoration; create attractive wooden articles.
  2. Paint different wood surfaces (Plywood, MDF, low-grade wood) using appropriate techniques.
  3. Perform pipe and pipeline painting, including color coding for safety compliance.
  4. Demonstrate pipeline procedures and safety aspects relevant to industrial painting.
  5. Apply graphics, sticker pasting, fixing, and locking on both wood and metal surfaces.
  6. Clean and prepare metal surfaces for preventive coatings.
  7. Apply primer and paint coatings on metal surfaces for corrosion prevention.

Advanced Painting Equipment & Application:

  1. Identify, replace, and assemble pneumatics and paint gun components (compressor, pressure gauge, filter regulator, valves, hoses).
  2. Master spray painting techniques, including spray gun handling and control of air/paint pressure.
  3. Operate and maintain spray booths, ovens, and cleaning systems; apply sealant components on metallic joints.
  4. Perform aspect ratio mixing of paint, hardener, and solvent; measure paint viscosity; operate the spray painting system.
  5. Apply spray painting techniques in home appliances, agricultural equipment, machines, and automotive bodies.

Finishing & Quality Control:

  1. Remove dents and restore damaged areas on vehicles or equipment; repaint and correct paint defects.
  2. Apply special effect finishes for modern furniture and interior elements.
  3. Operate powder coating systems, including pre-treatment and curing processes.
  4. Perform quality testing for various paints and painted films, ensuring film thickness, adhesion, durability, and finish quality.
