The Hospital Housekeeping trade is a job-oriented vocational training program powered by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). It is specifically designed to meet the employment demands of both government and private sectors. This trade offers excellent opportunities for self-employment and empowers individuals with practical skills, preparing them to fulfill the needs of Indian as well as international healthcare industries.
Under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS), Hospital Housekeeping has emerged as one of the popular trades delivered across the country through a wide network of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). The course is structured over one year (02 semesters) and covers both Domain and Core areas.
- The Domain Area (Trade Theory & Practical) imparts essential professional skills and technical knowledge.
- The Core Area (Employability Skills) focuses on developing soft skills, communication, life skills, and digital literacy to enhance overall employability.
Upon successful completion of the training program, candidates are awarded the National Trade Certificate (NTC) by NCVT, which is widely recognized and respected across industries both in India and abroad.
Role & Responsibilities of a Hospital Housekeeper:
Hospital Housekeepers play a critical role in maintaining a clean, hygienic, and sterile environment throughout the healthcare facility. Their responsibilities include:
- Performing infection control by sterilizing hospital areas to prevent the spread of disease.
- Carrying out waste management, ensuring the safe disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
- Replenishing linens and maintaining clean supplies in patient rooms, wards, and operation theaters.
- Emptying and cleaning waste bins and receptacles regularly to promote a sanitary environment.
- Using disinfectants to sanitize all surfaces, contributing to overall patient and staff safety.

JOB ROLE
Hospital Housekeeper
A Hospital Housekeeper plays a crucial role in maintaining a clean, sterile, and hygienic environment throughout healthcare facilities. They are responsible for upholding strict standards of cleanliness to prevent the spread of infections and diseases. Their key duties include:
- Maintaining sterile environments in patient rooms, surgical units, administrative offices, and restrooms by cleaning and disinfecting multiple times a day.
- Handling waste management, including the safe and responsible disposal of regular and surgical waste, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
- Replenishing linens, hospital gowns, and ensuring the availability of clean supplies in patient care areas.
- Polishing furniture, vacuuming carpets, and maintaining the general upkeep of assigned areas.
- Ensuring sanitization of surfaces using disinfectants and emptying waste bins and trash receptacles regularly to maintain hygiene.
- Assisting in laundry services, changing linens in patient rooms, and managing wastepaper baskets with special care in handling infectious waste.
Hospital Housekeepers are essential in creating a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, ensuring that infection control standards are consistently met.
Matron, Housekeeping (Controller of Household)
A Matron - Housekeeping supervises and coordinates the housekeeping activities in hostels, boarding houses, orphanages, hospitals, and other residential institutions. Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing the housekeeping staff, including Ayahs, waiters, and cleaners, ensuring they perform their duties efficiently.
- Allocating work schedules and monitoring cleaning activities to maintain hygiene and comfort for residents.
- Addressing the welfare and comfort of residents, particularly women residents, ensuring their needs are met.
- Ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of the premises and facilitating the smooth operation of household services.
- Acting as a liaison between residents and management to resolve issues and arrange for additional services as needed.
Janitor
A Janitor maintains cleanliness and ensures the orderly condition of hospitals, office buildings, hotels, apartment complexes, and similar establishments. Their typical duties include:
- Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming hallways, stairways, offices, and other common areas.
- Handling heating and cooling systems, such as regulating fuel flow to automatic furnaces or manually fueling hand-fired furnaces.
- Emptying garbage containers and waste bins, ensuring proper disposal practices are followed.
- Performing minor maintenance tasks, such as painting, plumbing, and basic electrical repairs using hand tools.
- Replacing air conditioner filters, notifying management of major repair needs, and ensuring the smooth operation of the building’s facilities.
- Maintaining outdoor areas by cleaning sidewalks, removing snow, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, and tending to flowers.
- Monitoring tenant behavior to ensure compliance with building regulations, and reporting any incidents to management.

- Perform and demonstrate the hospital waste disposal.
- Perform Safety awareness activity in hospital from fire, electrical and natural hazards.
- Identify diseases transmitted by rodents and animals and apply pests for Prevention, control and eradication of rodents and animal nuisance.
- Create and Maintain pleasant lighting, making aesthetic colour scheme, ventilation and applying roper interior decoration In different hospital areas.
- Distribute clean linen and hospital / surgical gown and maintain inventory.
- Demonstrate both internal and external environmental hygiene of hospital premises.
- Supervise both internal and external environmental hygiene of hospital premises.

- Revision, Project work and Examination
During the one-year duration of ͞Hospital Housekeeping͟ trade, a candidate is trained on Professional Skill, Professional Knowledge and Employability Skill. In addition to this, a candidate is entrusted to undertake project work, extracurricular activities and on-the-job training to build up confidence. The broad components covered related to the trade are categorized in two semesters each of six months duration. The semester wise course coverage is categorized as below:
1 st Semester – In the first semester, the trainee learns about elementary first-aid, firefighting, environment regulation and housekeeping, etc. The trainee understands the importance of personal hygiene, cleanliness and basic principles of sanitation of hospital environment. He practices basic and special cleaning procedures, maintenance of toilets. He learns the different process of water treatment and purification, removal of bacteria. Trainees gather knowledge of removal and control technique unwanted odours in the hospital premises. He learns the methods of handling and disposal of solid, liquid, pathological and nuclear waste. He knows the methods of extinction of fire by the different fire fighting equipments and awareness of handling the dangerous situations occurring by natural calamities. He will able to supervise the precaution, control and eradication of the pest, rodent and animal nuisance.
2 nd Semester – In the second semester, the trainee learns to maintain the environment pleasant to patients, staff and visitors. He learns to make aesthetic and suitable arrangement of soft furnishing. The trainee learns quantitative and qualitative requirement of lightings in different hospital areas. The trainee acquires knowledge in hospital linen services, viz. selection, procurement, storing, sterilizing, replacing and accounting. The trainee learns to maintain housekeeping equipment. The trainee also supervises both internal and external environmental hygiene of hospital premises and carries out infection control measures. He monitors and maintains various housekeeping records and documents. He acquires knowledge of basic computer operations to maintain hospital management data. The trainee also undergoes two weeks on-the- job training in various hospitals at the end of the second semester which gives them more practical exposure to hospital environment.
