The ITI trade in Construction and Wood Working is an industry-driven, job-oriented program, approved and powered by NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training). This trade opens opportunities for government and private sector employment and fosters entrepreneurial skills for self-employment. The course is designed to meet the growing industrial demand both within India and in international markets, providing comprehensive skills in construction techniques and wood working applications.

Course Overview

The Construction and Wood Working trade follows a multi-skill training model, aimed at developing a skilled workforce for various roles in the construction and wood-based industries. The program is structured in three phases, with active participation and collaboration from local industries and Industrial Management Committees (IMCs).

Training Structure

  1. Broad-Based Basic Training (BBBT):
    • Duration: 1 Year
    • Focus on foundational skills in construction practices and wood working techniques.
    • Covers basic safety, tool handling, carpentry, masonry, plumbing basics, and construction materials.
  2. Advanced Module Training:
    • Duration: 6 Months (after completing BBBT)
    • Specialized skills in specific domains, such as advanced carpentry, furniture making, wood carving, construction site management, and modern construction techniques.
    • Modules are selected in consultation with the IMC/local industry to align with the skill requirements of the region.
  3. Specialized Module Training (Industry-Based):
    • Conducted primarily by the industry partners.
    • The curriculum, duration, and assessment criteria are designed in collaboration with local industries and IMC.
    • Certification for the specialized module is jointly awarded by the State Government and the industry, with recognition from NCVT.

Assessment & Certification

  • Trade Testing & Certification is conducted for both Broad-Based Basic Training and Advanced Module Training under the aegis of NCVT.
  • Specialized Module Certification is jointly issued by the State Government and industry partners, ensuring industry-relevant recognition.

Key Features of the Program

  • Practical Training on Shop Floor: A minimum of 25% to 40% of the total training duration is dedicated to hands-on experience on the industry shop floor, providing real-world exposure.
  • Multi-Entry and Multi-Exit Options:
    • Trainees have the flexibility to enter or exit the program at various stages:
      • After Broad-Based Basic Training (1 Year)
      • After Advanced Module Training
    • They can also rejoin later for additional advanced modules or specialized training, based on personal career goals.

Guidelines for Advanced Module Training

  • A minimum of three modules should be made available, ensuring accommodation for 96 trainees in two shifts.
  • If nationally developed modules are insufficient for local industry needs, the State Government may design and propose custom modules in collaboration with local industries. These must include:
    • Detailed tool and equipment lists
    • Instructor qualifications
    • Space and infrastructure requirements
      The proposed modules are then submitted to DGE&T for NCVT approval.
  • A trainee can enroll in only one Advanced Module at a time.

Eligibility Criteria & Infrastructure

  • Admission Criteria, space requirements, and qualification standards for instructors are predefined for the Construction and Wood Working sector and are shared in detailed annexures.
  • The program ensures world-class training facilities, providing access to modern tools, machinery, and well-equipped workshops.
